Botox Injections

Botox treatments are often used as an alternative to plastic surgery. Botox can be injected either into your facial muscles or into your muscles in your hands or arms. If Botox is being used for cosmetic purposes, the Botox agent is injected into the muscles to temporarily hinder their movement. In cases of excessive sweating, Botox is injected into the sweat glands to control the rate of sweating.

Botox injections (or Botox Cosmetic) works to temporarily halt a muscle movement so that it does not move. This is achieved by injecting a chemical known as botulinum toxin A directly into the muscle. The toxin is made by the same microbe that produces Botox, a form of paralytic food poison. The Botox treatment is used to stop frown lines, smile lines, forehead lines, frown lines and spiky hair. This is not the most widely researched procedure in the cosmetic industry, but millions of dollars are spent each year to research products and procedures that improve the appearance of wrinkles or treat other cosmetic issues such as excessive sweating, lazy eye and neck spasms.

This is a relatively non-invasive procedure and the skin around the injection site will become red and swollen within three to ten days after the injection. Swelling and redness should subside within three to ten days. Occasionally the injection site may enlarge slightly or bloat. You should contact your physician if these symptoms occur after your procedure.

If you have excessive sweating or a serious facial muscle spasm, your doctor will likely recommend that you have Botox injections. Before you decide whether this is the right procedure for you, be sure to discuss it with your doctor. There are some people who should not have this procedure and there are others who should be considered a good candidate. Also, there are different types of individuals that can benefit from this procedure than other individuals. It is important to know the pros and cons of your candidacy prior to scheduling a consultation with your doctor.

Some individuals benefit from Botox injections for relaxing the muscles of the face, neck, hands and feet. Cervical dystrophy is a medical condition where in the soft tissue on the cervix becomes thickened. The most common cause of cervical dystonia is pregnancy, but it can also occur later in life. This thickened tissue is what Botox is injected into, along with the muscles that control the movements of the face. Cervical dystrophy can result in a smile that does not look natural, uncontrolled movements of the face and a loss of muscle tone.

Vision problems can be corrected through Botox injections as well. If you notice results from the previous treatments, you may want to consider expanding your scope of possible benefits. In some cases, the vision problems were caused by a refractive error, meaning that the shape or position of your eyes were affected by factors outside of your control. Now, if you have the means to change the shape or position of your eyes you will notice results from the injections.

Botox is generally injected into muscles where you notice weakness or unwanted habits. These injections work by paralyzing the muscle so that you cannot move it. Once the muscle has been paralyzed, your doctor can then tighten the muscle and help you regain control of your body. If you notice that Botox injections have helped your muscle strength return, you may qualify for this treatment to improve your quality of life.

Before scheduling a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure, schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. During this consultation your physician will take an examination and perform a mini gait analysis to help him or her determine if you are a good candidate for Botox injections. You may need to wait at least three months before you can schedule the procedure since the three months are the time it takes for the toxin to be administered throughout your entire body. You may find that the results seen during your initial consultation are enough to convince you to schedule the procedure.
